Coil and implant contraception

We fit and remove coils and implants at Brockwell Park Surgery. This service is only available to patients registered at the practice.

Coil removals

In most cases, this is a very simple procedure which can be done by a nurse. However, if you also need to discuss your contraception options, please book a doctor’s appointment. Both appointments can be booked via reception on 020 8678 5400 or contact us.

WARNING: sperm can live for up to 7 days, so please make sure there is no unprotected intercourse for 7 days before a coil removal or a coil exchange, or else there may be a risk of pregnancy.

All other coil and implant procedures

Please contact us and let us know that you are enquiring about a coil or implant procedure. You will be sent a questionnaire by email or text message to obtain further information. The questionnaire link will expire after 7 days. You will then be contacted by the practice regarding the next steps.

Coil insertions in breastfeeding women

Fitting a contraceptive coil in the first 6 months after delivery in a breastfeeding woman is associated with a significantly higher risk of perforating the womb. As a result, we encourage breastfeeding women to use alternative contraception in the 6 months after delivery.

Devices offered at Brockwell Park Surgery

Hormonal coils

We fit the Mirena coil (52mg progesterone) and the smaller Kyleena coil (19.5mg progesterone).

Non hormonal coils

We only fit the Nova T380 device. This is licensed for 5 years in patients under 40, and for as long as needed if fitted after your 40th birthday.

Contraceptive implant

We fit the nexplanon device.

Local clinics offering coils and implants

Local clinics also offer appointments for long acting reversible contraceptives. They will usually schedule an initial telephone appointment and then book you in for the procedure.
